This is an unique option to see Alerce trees without too many hours of trekking up in the mountains.
With a short drive we will go directly into a former private area (about 200 hectares). This piece of land once belonged to a German immigrant family and was, more recently, sold to the state. Since then, this area and the rare Alerce trees are protected and administrated as a state monument by the national park guard "CONAF".
It was a miracle the Alerce trees in this area survived, because this piece of land was never touched in the whole history of Chile.
We will walk about one hour (easy walk) in untouched native forest, and see a lot of huge Alerce trees and wildlife (with some luck Magellanic woodpecker).
After this beautiful experience we will drive to the fish market called Angelmó in Puerto Montt, where we can eat really good authentic seafood and visit the handicraft market
Logging of Alerce Fitzroya in colonial Chile began in 1599 and continued until 1976 when it became forbidden by law, although illegal logging still occasionally occurs.
In 1993 a specimen from Chile was found to be 3622 years old, making it the second oldest fully verified (by counting growth rings) age for any living tree species, after the Great Basin Bristlecone Pine.
