Torres del Paine

Guanaco - Torres del Paine - Chile The Torres del Paine (Paine=Towers), one of Chiles most popular destinations. This landscape of glaciers, lakes and gnarled trees enables some of the greatest hikes on this planet. Here you can still find the rare guanacos and condors. The Torres del Paine National Park was declared Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in 1978. The national park is located between the Patagonian steppe and the Campo de hielo sur (Southern Ice Field), the biggest coherent ice field beyond the polar zones. This huge cold storage room influences the climate in the national park so effectively that the temperature rises only up to 11° even in summer. Therefore the best time for hiking is between December and January.
