The national park is located between the Patagonian steppe and the Campo de hielo sur (Southern Ice Field), the biggest coherent ice field beyond the polar zones. This huge cold storage room influences the climate in the national park so effectively that the temperature rises only up to 11° even in summer. Therefore the best time for hiking is between December and January.

Puerto Natales, Chile. Puerto Natales is located along the coast of Ultima-Esperanza-Sundes. Today, the village itself serves mainly as an entrance to the most spectacular sights of the Magellan.

 


Penguins - Fundacion Otway - Punta Arenas - Chile. Founded in the year 1991, the Chilean non-governmental organisation of public utility is devoted to nature conservation. Its core activity is the protection of a mixed colony of Humboldt- and Magellan-Penguins and its attendance.
