„Guabun“ beach – Pacific Ocean – Chiloe The island Chiloé in Chile is 215 km long and 80 km wide. There are no high mountains along the Panamericana but wood, meadows and livestock farming. On the beaches of the Pacific with its partly raw beauty you can go on lovely hikes.

 


Chapel in Chiloé, Chile. The most beautiful examples of architecture on the island are the Jesuit wooden chapels. The Jesuit have envangelised Chiloe since the 18th century. Numerous small chapels are witnesses from that period, the island has been named “Land of Chapels”.

Stilt construction in Castro. Since 1982 Castro is the capital of Chiloe. Built in 1567, it is one of the oldest cities in Chile, unfortunately there are no constructional remains from that time. The “palafitos” are residential houses built on stilt; they are in the south along the street leading to Castro.

Fishermen near Dalcahué, Chiloé – Chile. Here in Dalcahué you can especially taste Curanto, a mixture of diverse mussels and meat served with Milcao, a traditionally flatbread made from potatoes and flour. The ensemble is cooked over an open fire, made up over a hole in the ground.

 


Shell collecting along the Pacific Coast – Chiloe, Chile. Women get up very early in the morning and go shell collecting. As long as you haven’t tried fresh mussels of Chiloe you don’t know about the fine taste of mussels.

The chapel San Antonio de Colo in Chiloe, Chile. The style of many chapels is influenced from German architecture there and then since the evangelising Jesuit predominantly derived from Bavaria.

 


Penguin near Fundacion Otway – Chiloé, Chile. Founded in the year 1991, the Chilean non-governmental organisation of public utility is devoted to nature conservation. Its core activity is the protection of a mixed colony of Humboldt- and Magellan-Penguins and its attendance.
