Atacama

Atacama Desert – located in the North of Chile, the Atacama Desert is the driest desert of the world. It borders on Bolivia and Peru. There are ancient Indian ruins, hot springs, salt plains and fascinating geysers, the copper mine Chuquicamata and deserted ghost towns of the nitrate era.

Former mine worker cemetery – Atacama – Chile. In the middle of the 19th century saltpetre sources were found and mined in the desert region, which was unnoticed so far. From this age we can still find many deserted villages and cemeteries. In 1879, the battle for the control of the nitrate mines began between Chile, Peru and Bolivia (“Nitrate War”)

Grave plunder – Atacame – Chile. The graves were all not very deep and due to the dry air many mummies were conserved. Grave plunderer hoped to find any valuable things, but most of the time without success.

The „Arch“of Antofagasta. Antofagasta is the fifth largest town in Chile and the most populated in the desert region. 13 kilometres north of the town you can find the famous La Portada, a huge cliff arch eroded by the sea. The town Antofagasta’s landmark is La Portada. With 355 km in length there is the broadest part of Chile. Chile is a very long - 4300 km - but narrow country.

“La Panamericana” - Panamericana, the world’s dream-road, leads from Alaska to Chile, to Tierra del Fuego. Many, partly desolate kilometres through heat and dust, coldness and ice, it is a challenge for many journeys, be it by car, bus or bicycle as well.

Church of San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. The oasis town San Pedro de Atacama is located in the centre of the Atacama Desert. It is a popular starting point for sightseeing in the desert’s north – e.g. the salt lake Salar de Atacama, Valle de Luna or el Tatio with its geysers. The curch is made of cactus wood and one of the oldest churches in whole Chile. The museum of archaeology, named after Gustavo Le Paige de Walque is one of the best in South America.

„El Tatio“– Chile – Atacama. Starting from San Pedro de Atacama the journey leads up to the geysers. There in the Chilean Andes one can enjoy this natural spectacle from a view 4.000m height above sea level. Around 10 a.m. when the sun has risen completely there is nothing left to be seen from this natural spectacle. Get up early if you want to watch water bubble out of the volcano.

„el Tatio“ – Atacama – Chile. The probably most interesting journey starts from San Pedro and leads up to the 100 geysers of el Tatio. You depart at 3 a.m., amounting 4000 m above sea level, to enjoy this spectacle of nature. The hot spray arises from the frozen earth and shoots high in the clear sky of the Chilean Andes.
